Julie Cajigas

Julie Cajigas is a College Lecturer at The University of Akron School of Communication, where she teaches courses in public relations, social media, and journalism. During the 2014-2015 academic year, Cajigas worked with a faculty team to pilot The Converged Media Immersion Program (uakron.edu/CMIP), a multimedia journalism program sponsored by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight foundation. She previously served as the interim director of the Social Media Learning Lab, and advised the student-run social media agency, Kanga Communication, housed in The Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing at The University of Akron. In 2012, she was honored with an Outstanding and Distinguished Faculty Award from the residence hall honorary.
Prior to joining academia, Cajigas owned a small public relations and social media copywriting business, worked as a trade journalist in the promotional industry, and practiced public relations in both corporate and nonprofit settings. Cajigas earned her Masters of Applied Communication Theory and Methodology from Cleveland State University. Her research interests include social media, cyber bullying, cyber stalking, public relations, and stereotypes in broadcast media. Cajigas serves as a board member for Global Ties Akron, a non-profit organization dedicated to intercultural exchange in the Akron Community. She is also an accomplished musician, who has been a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus for more than 10 years.
